Bachelor Program in Public Safety and Fire Science

In past few decades, serious fire incidents, such as the early 93' Luen-Ching Restaurant Fire(論情西餐廳大火) to the New Taipei water park explosion(八仙樂園塵爆) that occurred in 2015, have highlighted the importance of public security and fire safety. With the urban development, buildings are getting higher and closer together, and we have been stepping in the aging society since 1993. While the percentage of population ages 65 and above keep increasing, a need for access-free facilities and public safety areas for all ages is also growing. Besides the improvement of hardware facilities, the importance shall also be attached to the education in public security of buildings and fire science, also the cultivation of professional personnel.

To make response to the urgent calls for professional personnel of public and fire safety, Chia Nan University of pharmacy and Science established the first post-bachelor degree in 2013.  In 2017, we established four-year degree program in Public Safety and Fire Science, with the permission of Ministry of Education. The curriculum of this program integrate the academic fields of Building Safety with Fire Science, focusing on the skill-training of preventing and inspecting disasters, in order to assist students obtaining certificates and become competitive and capable of obtaining job offers right after graduation.

Based on the mission of our College of Sustainable Environment, we aims at protection of physical and property safety and environmental protection, this Bachelor Program combines the feature of man-made disasters prevention and disaster prevention management, including promoting concepts of disaster prevention, building up awareness of crisis, establishing safe living space and so on.

We also collaborate with international disasters prevention associations to learn more and improve our disasters prevention technology including:

1. the planning of fire safety

2. the inspection of building public security

3. Occupational disasters prevention and management

News of The Kaohsiung gas explosion stunned people throughout the whole nation on August 1, 103.After the municipal elections which had been held near the end of the year, general public have slowly forgotten the accident, except the victims. According to Wu Hong-Jun, a researcher at the Labor and Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute, which specializes in industrial explosion research and identification, there will be a runaway explosion of 10 deaths and injuries in every five-year in Taiwan, and a chemical explosion of hundreds of people killed and injured will take place in 20 years. The profession and education on how to prevent "public security" incident must be paid attention to by the public. He pointed it out in his article published on Labor and Occupational Safety and Health Newsletter, Issued in February, 104.

The opening ceremony of the field for lift operation test

This Bachelor Program aims to cultivate professionals with the specialties of public security and fire safety. (According to the employment market survey, the manpower demand in this industry is urgent. at least 3,000 employees are still needed in recent years.) And we are the only higher education institute, which have its own officially-approved test field (facility) for lift operation. After obtaining relevant certificates, students can serve as technicians for lift installation and repair or inspectors with official qualification.

In the future, we are going to collaborate with Taiwan Public Safety Institute, applying to the Construction and Planning Agency for running the training and workshops for technicians of building interior installation and repair. We believe this will be of great help to industry-university cooperation and talents cultivation in the field of public safety and fire protection.
