Bachelor Program in Public Safety and Fire Science

Overview

This program is the first bachelor's degree program among all colleges in Taiwan that combines disciplines of "fire science" and "public safety of buildings", and have obtained permission from the ministry of education to recruit students for four-year day program, four-year continuing education program, and two-year program since 2017. The four-year day program is open to students graduate from departments of Power Mechanical Engineering Group, Electrical Engineering and Electronic Engineering Group, Civil Engineering and Architecture Group of comprehensive high schools and senior vocational schools; four-year evening program and two-year program are open to applicants who hold a bachelor's degree with verification by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan.
 

Education Goals in Two Target Fields

Field of Fire Safety Technology

Cultivate talents specialized in design, construction supervision, installation and service of fire safety equipment.

Field of Buildings Inspection Technology

Cultivate talents specialized in design and maintenance of building safety equipments and fire-prevention refuge facilities.

* Building safety equipments: the electrical power, telecom, gas, water supply, sewage, drainage, air conditioning, elevating, fire fighting, lightning absorption, air sheltering, waste disposal, and privacy right protection equipments installed on the buildings.

* Fire-prevention refuge facilities: Facilities that ensure when there is a fire, occupants can move directly to emergency exits to either leave the fire scene or reach the area of refuge to wait for rescue.

 

 

Education Strategy

In order to cultivate quality students that have high competitiveness, this degrees program aims to assist students to obtain professional certificates and licences through implementing " elite education " and "graduation threshold ". And to develop students' professional competencies, the following features are expected to meet the requirements for achieving this degree:

Professional Certificates and Licences

Courses for certificates and licences are offered at least once for each semester, assisting students to obtain professional certificates and licences such as licence for Technician of special examination for fire control equipment certificate, certificates of level B technician for lift installation and repair, certificate of level B technician for building interior installation and repair management etc. Each student must obtain at least one level B certificate or pass the National Examination before graduation. Students fail to achieve the requirements mentioned above while the 2nd semester of the 4th year have to attend the Professional and Technical Examination held by the department of this program.

Internship Experience

An undergraduate will have to complete 320-hour internship for two credits in the first semester of the 4th year. This is to broaden students' personal interests so as to develop diverse learning paths, shape career trajectory, and expand professional network to reach more job opportunities.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Based on the specialized knowledge in Public Safety and Fire Science, the curriculum of the program has been designed alongside other three departments of our school— Department of Occupational Safety and Health & Institute of Industrial Safety and Disaster Prevention, Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, and Department of Applied Geoinformatics . Through the cooperation among various departments, the curriculum fully utilizes campus resources at the same time offer opportunities to experience off-campus activities, expanding opportunities for students to serve creativity, learn by observation, and enrich the cultural content of their owns.

Emphasis on Ethical Education
The course on fire science ethics is required to all first-year students. Through the ethical education, we emphasize the importance of attitude towards work and study.
